Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has warned of high inflation and labor shortages which could lead to the central bank increasing interest rates faster than expected. He said fighting inflation is his top priority, and the unemployment rate of 3.4% may not be sustainable without further increasing price spikes. Powell suggested he hoped unemployment wouldn’t have to rise significantly, but his remarks have alarmed investors who fear higher rates could harm the economy. However, the central bank wants the labor market to weaken in order to help cool wage gains, which feed inflation.
